Illinois man burns hands, face carrying pot off grease fire

"When a grease fire occurs the best thing to do is turn off the burner and put a lid on it," Assistant Chief J.P. Penet said.

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — A man suffered serious burns to his hands and face after trying to take a pot off a grease fire in a Belleville, Illinois, apartment Sunday.

The Belleville Fire Department said the fire started in the kitchen of the apartment. While trying to get the pot off the fire and out of the house, the man suffered the burns.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one wall of the kitchen. No other apartments were affected by the fire.

"When a grease fire occurs the best thing to do is turn off the burner and put a lid on it," Assistant Chief J.P. Penet said.

The man is being treated at a local hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.
