Homicide investigation underway after man critically injured in stabbing near Rauschenbach Park in north St. Louis

In a Tuesday update, police said the man remained in critical condition with death imminent.

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives are investigating a stabbing that critically injured a man Monday afternoon in north St. Louis.

Sgt. Charles Wall, a spokesperson for the department, said officers initially responded shortly before 3:30 p.m. to a call for a shooting in the 2900 block of Rauschenbach Avenue, near Rauschenbach Park. They found a man in his 30s unconscious and not breathing with stab wounds, which officers initially thought were gunshot wounds.

Police initially reported the man was pronounced dead at the hospital; however, in a Tuesday update, they said the man remained in critical, unstable condition with death imminent.

Due to the severity of his injuries, the department's Homicide Division is investigating.

Police identified the suspect as a 53-year-old man. It was unclear whether he was in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.

This would be the 57th homicide in the city, according to 5 On Your Side data.
