ST. LOUIS — A 15-year-old boy died and a 16-year-old was injured after their car crashed into the side of a brick building Wednesday night in south St. Louis.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the deadly crash happened at about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Gravois Avenue and Newport Court in the city's Bevo neighborhood.
Police said the driver was pronounced dead, and a passenger was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The driver was identified Thursday afternoon as 15-year-old Brian Corona-Madrigal.
The passenger had stable vital signs when taken to an area hospital.
An accident reconstruction investigation found that Corona-Madrigal and his passenger were speeding down Gravois in an Infinity I30 when they tried to swerve out of the way of another car. Police said the car then crashed onto the sidewalk, struck a fire hydrant and flipped into the air.
The car crashed into a building on the 4600 block of Gravois Avenue where police found it a short time later.
At the scene, a 5 On Your Side photographer saw the car had knocked over a fire hydrant and a street sign and caused significant damage to the brick building.
The investigation remains ongoing.
