ST. LOUIS — A 17-year-old was charged as an adult for a shooting that left a man dead last October.
St. Louis police announced Wednesday that Tabari Freeman was certified as an adult by juvenile court and charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.
Freeman is the teenager who police said escaped from the St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center in February by rolling under a security gate in the center's parking garage. He was returned to the center later that month and charged with a violation related to the escape.
He is accused of fatally shooting 20-year-old Calvin Kelly on Oct. 24 on the 4200 block of Shreve Avenue.
According to a probable cause statement, Freeman was arguing with Kelly and another person when he pulled out a gun and fatally shot Kelly. He shot at the other man but didn't strike him, police said.
Freeman made an incriminating statement during a police interview and was also identified by an eyewitness, police said.
A judge ordered that Freeman be held without bond pending trial. His next bond hearing was scheduled for Thursday.
