MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. — A cleanup is underway after staff with MSD Project Clear found a force main break at one of the district's sewage pump stations Tuesday morning in Maryland Heights.

A spokesman with the district said in a press release Tuesday afternoon that crews isolated the break and stopped the overflow. The issue has been contained in a small, wooded area near Creve Coeur Mill Road and Highway 141 in Maryland Heights.

As of Tuesday afternoon, crews began cleanup with vacuum trucks and other pumps to get the wastewater back into the system, which would take a couple of days to complete. The district said sewer service in the area would not be affected.

There were warning signs posted in the area of the cleanup.

"While there is no immediate threat to public health or safety, everyone should avoid wastewater. Anyone in direct physical contact with (sewage) should immediately and thoroughly wash with soap and water," the press release said.

A force main is a sewer line that pumps wastewater from a facility to a water treatment plant.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has been notified of the issue.
