Police arrest suspect in Metro East animal shelter robbery

GPG is holding a “Clear the Shelter- Burglary Edition” event with the goal of finding homes or adopter heroes for all shelter dogs and cats.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — East St. Louis police have arrested a suspect and identified another in the recent Gateway Pet Guardians break-in and robbery, the animal shelter said in a news release Wednesday morning.

The shelter did not share further details on the investigation. The East St. Louis Police Department has not returned 5 On Your Side's request for further details as of this article's publication.

In addition to the arrest, the shelter's recovery from the break-in has also been eased by an outpouring of support from the East. St. Louis community.

"Not only did GPG raise enough money to add a security camera and alarm to the door that the burglars entered but also Instinct Pet Food, Connectria, SFW Partners and Phoenix Solutions have offered to donate over a dozen laptops to replace the aging computers that staff have been using," the shelter said in the release.

The shelter also received donations of over $10,000, numerous supplies, free security assessment offers and treats for staff.

GPG is holding a “Clear the Shelter- Burglary Edition” event with the goal of finding homes or adopter heroes for all shelter dogs and cats. The shelter will be waiving adoptions fees on all adult dogs and cats from 2-7 p.m. Thursday, 2-6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
