New drone program comes to Webster Groves

The drones cost the city nearly $20,000 and will be used for police, fire, public works and parks and recreation departments.

WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. — The city of Webster Groves has purchased two new drones for nearly $20,000.

Webster Groves Police Department says they've had access to drones for several years but it's always been limited, until now.

Officials say these drones will be used to improve officer safety and enhance search and rescue efforts for residents. The devices will be used for an array of things including traffic crash reconstruction, pre-tactical deployment, patrol-led deployment, forensic investigations, searching for lost persons including thermal imaging, traffic pattern review and drones as first responders.

A lieutenant and two officers will be among the first to be trained on drones with up to four trained drone pilots in the future.

The drone program will then allow training in other city departments in Webster Groves like fire, public works and even parks and recreation.

Police say they'll keep in mind all federal and local privacy laws and policies.

Residents have since voiced concerns to police including drones recording residents. Some also asked if the money could be better spent on other needs. Residents say their main concerns with the drones are privacy and costs.

Webster Groves police say they're taking steps to ensure privacy is not violated.

All drone pilots will go through training giving them FAA certification and ensuring they know federal, state and local laws regarding privacy considerations.

Police say a smaller drone will be equipped with thermal imaging that's limited by weather conditions and flight time. A larger drone will be a commercial-grade system that can fly longer and be used in various conditions.

Wednesday at 10 p.m., 5 On Your Side will have a 1-on-1 interview with the police captain and lieutenant who will be training with the drones.

Also, on April 27th Webster Groves will host a public safety day from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the police department and fire house #1 where you can see the drones and ask questions.
