ST. LOUIS — A man died more than a week after an assault in north St. Louis, police said.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded shortly after 4 p.m. on April 1 in the 5600 block of Cote Brilliante for an assault.

Responding officers found a 40-year-old man suffering from head wounds. He was transported to an area hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

St. Louis police said his condition worsened and was transferred to the ICU after surgery to repair a brain hemorrhage. He was in stable condition but he was later pronounced deceased shortly after 8 p.m. on April 10.

The Medical Examiner's Office conducted a post-mortem examination and ruled the death as a homicide. The immediate cause of death was a remote head wound caused by blunt force, police said.

The man's identity has not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

The city's Homicide Division is investigating.
