Man struck, killed early Sunday in Fairview Heights

Police said they believed the man had just left the MetroLink station and was attempting to cross the roadway when he was hit.

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — A man was killed after being hit by a car early Sunday morning in Fairview Heights.

According to Fairview Heights police, officers responded just after 1 a.m. Sunday to the report of a pedestrian struck near the intersection of St. Clair and 3rd avenues. There, police found 48-year-old Jeremy Gunter of Belleville severely injured after being hit by a car. Police said they believed he had just gotten off a MetroLink train.

Police said Gunter was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

Preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed a vehicle had struck Gunter while he was trying to cross the roadway. No one else was injured in the crash.

The Fairview Heights Police Department and the Metro East Traffic Crash Assistance Team were continuing to investigate.
