'Obviously, it is disappointing': Metro East animal shelter broken into

Anyone with information is asked to call Gateway Pet Guardians at 618-687-8007 Ext. 5 or send an email to info@gatewaypets.org.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — A Metro East animal shelter is looking for help identifying two men seen in security video breaking into its facility overnight.

In a press release, Gateway Pet Guardians said two men entered the facility in East St. Louis and stole laptops, dog medication and leftover pizza from the refrigerator.

“The most important thing is that no animals or people were hurt or affected, but obviously it is disappointing that anyone would steal from an animal shelter,” Director of Operations Jill Henke said in the press release.

The shelter included photos and a video of the men captured by security cameras located inside the shelter.

“We have been operating in East St. Louis for 5 years and never had any issues like this.  Our neighbors do such a great job looking out for us.  If anyone recognizes either of these individuals, please let us know so we can hold them accountable,” said Henke.

Anyone with information is asked to call Gateway Pet Guardians at 618-687-8007 Ext. 5 or send an email to info@gatewaypets.org.

The shelter is asking for donations or support to replace the stolen items and upgrade its security systems. Donations can be made online by clicking here or can be mailed to or dropped off at the shelter at 725 N. 15th Street, East St. Louis, IL 62205.
