Charges filed after argument at Hazelwood QuikTrip ends in gunfire

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged Dae'jon Clemons with one count each of unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.

HAZELWOOD, Mo. — Police said a man fired several shots into the air after an argument Tuesday at a QuikTrip gas station on Lindbergh Boulevard.

No one was hurt, but this is the second time in recent months that shots were fired at the gas station off Interstate 270.

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged Dae'jon Clemons with one count each of unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.

According to a probable cause statement, Clemons confessed to police that he fired shots from his car.

He was being held on $250,000 bond at the St. Louis County Jail.

Hazelwood resident Karen Condon heard and saw several police cars headed toward the QuikTrip on Lindbergh just before noon Tuesday.

"A lot of sirens," Condon said.

Several Amazon drivers were outside of the gas station where police questioned them.

Condon wants to stay in the neighborhood she's lived in for decades, but she said what happened Tuesday leaves her with questions about the future.

"It seems like so many people are armed and how do you stop that?" Condon said.

An Amazon driver told 5 On Your Side two coworkers also drivers were talking near the gas pumps and one of them commented on a woman who walked by.

When the woman became upset, they said she called her son to the gas station and he fired a gun into the air.

Amazon employees said they ran into the gas station to take cover.

"We started hearing sirens and to be honest it's something you kind of get used to," Condon said.

Community leaders like Brian McKenna are also speaking up.

Late last year, there was another shooting at the same QuikTrip where police said 70 shots were fired. An 18-year-old died.

McKenna is a retired Hazelwood Police Department lieutenant who lives in the neighborhood.

McKenna still helps train officers and said he wants to see more community meetings happen to address the violence at the gas station.

"I don't know what we really can do about it. I do know that there are other things that the police department can do. One of the big things is get to know the public better," McKenna said.

5 On Your Side reached out to Amazon who did not respond to the request comment. QuikTrip's corporate communications manager responded to the request for comment, which read:

“Our top priority is always the safety of our employees and customers. An altercation between two customers resulted in an individual discharging a weapon into the air. No customers or employees were harmed during the incident. We are working closely with law enforcement to assist in the ongoing investigation. As always, we will continue to take necessary and appropriate measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees, customers and communities we serve. Said, Aisha Jefferson, QuikTrip’s corporate Communications Manager.”
