Victims identified in fatal crash that temporarily closed IL-159 in Madison County Sunday

MADISON COUNTY, Ill. — Two women died in a fatal car crash in Madison County that temporarily closed the roadway Sunday afternoon. 

Illinois State Police Troop 8 said the two-car crash happened just before 1 p.m. Sunday on Illinois Route 159, south of Illinois Route 140, in Madison County.

According to a press release from the Madison County Coroner's Office, a driver in a Nissan Sentra drove into the path of a Dodge Caravan, hitting the car head-on. That driver was pronounced dead at the scene. 

She was identified Monday as 91-year-old Delores Long, of St. Louis.

The second victim of the crash was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. She was identified as 63-year-old Julie Schroeder, of Bloomingdale, Illinois. 

The Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit and the coroner's office are investigating the cause of the crash. 

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, all lanes were closed at 1:07 p.m. and expected to remain closed until 4:30 p.m. Sunday. ISP urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes. The roadway has since reopened.
