2.8 magnitude earthquake felt across the Metro East area

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake occurred at 6:55 p.m. near Germantown, a small village in Clinton County.

ST. LOUIS — A 2.8 magnitude earthquake occurred Thursday evening near Germantown, Illinois, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The USGS reported the earthquake occurred at 6:55 p.m. just north of the intersection of County Road 1000 North and Germantown Road near Germantown, a small village in Clinton County.

A USGS map shows where residents reported feeling the quake, including locations all across the Metro East area.

There were no official reports of damage as of Thursday evening.

Initial reports from the USGS measured the depth of the earthquake at 14.2 miles. Bedrock in the St. Louis region helps seismic waves to travel further, causing earthquakes to be more widely felt.
