Deadly car vs. semitruck crash closes I-44 eastbound in Sullivan

The crash involving a car and a semitruck happened sometime before 6:30 a.m. on I-44 near Exit 185.

SULLIVAN, Mo. — A deadly crash has closed eastbound Interstate 44 in Sullivan, Missouri.

The crash involving a semitruck and a passenger car happened sometime before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday on I-44 near Exit 185, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop C.

MSHP said the the driver of the semi was heading westbound on I-44 near Sullivan when the driver crossed into the eastbound lanes, hit another car head-on and caught fire.

One person driving in the eastbound lane has died, MSHP said. The person in that car was identified as Edith Mckee, 59, of Sullivan.

Crews could be seen battling flames on Missouri Department of Transportation traffic cameras.

According to MSHP, all eastbound lanes were shut down due to the crash, and the length of the closure was unknown. 

MSHP did not say what may have caused the driver to cross over the median and enter the eastbound lanes.
