ROXANA, Ill. — A farmer's livelihood was devastated Wednesday morning after a large fire destroyed most of his equipment.
A barn fire in Roxana, Illinois bellowed a large plume of smoke easily seen by drivers on Interstate 255 at around 7:40 a.m.
There was more than $50,000 worth of tractors in the barn, the barn's owner told 5 On Your Side photographer Eric Voss at the scene. A nearby greenhouse was also growing more than 3,000 tomatoes.
The fire reportedly destroyed the barn, the greenhouse and everything inside both the structures.
Roxana Fire Department officials estimated the fire would be out by 10 a.m. Crews had to cut through sheet metal in the barn to get to the fire. One firefighter reportedly pulled a muscle during the fire's containment, but that firefighter is expected to be OK.
The Roxana Fire Department and the Rosewood Heights Fire Protection District fought the fire. Neither department has shared details on the potential start of the fire.
