CHANHASSEN, MN/USA - MARCH 17, 2018: Walgreens store exterior and sign. Walgreens is the largest drug retail chain in the United States.

ST. LOUIS — Walgreens will close its store at 1400 N. Grand Blvd., in the city’s Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood, on April 9.

A spokesperson for the pharmacy chain said the location’s closure is the result of “unsustainable business performance.”

“When faced with the difficult decision to close a location, several factors are taken into account, including our existing footprint of stores, dynamics of the local market, and changes in the buying habits of our patients and customers, among other reasons,” the company said.

Walgreens, which said it’s working with employees at its North Grand store to offer comparable roles at other company stores nearby, will continue to operate 30 locations throughout St. Louis.

The pharmacy giant in October named former Express Scripts leader Tim Wentworth as its chief executive, and he said Walgreens was on track with cost-cutting initiatives which aim to slash $1 billion in expenses this fiscal year.
