St. Louis native works on Oscar-winning documentary short 'The Last Repair Shop'

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis native worked on the Academy Award-winning documentary short "The Last Repair Shop."

Writer, director and producer Sharee Silerio grew up in St. Louis and earned her Bachelor of Arts from Saint Louis University and Master of Arts from Webster University, according to her LinkedIn profile

Silerio made the big move to Los Angeles two years ago, according to her Facebook profile, and she currently works as a producer for Breakwater Studios, an award-winning film studio with a focus on documentary shorts.

"My role on this film was production coordinator, and this would not have been the car if (1) I hadn't created a profile on Brown Girls Doc Mafia, and (2) Mario (her husband) wouldn't have pulled me aside for a two-minute conversation in the kitchen about moving to LA in the beginning of 2022," Silerio wrote in a Facebook post announcing the win. "I want to thank God, who put within me a dream and desire to be in this place at this time, along with the courage and faith to see moving over 1,800 miles away from home through."

Directed by Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers and created by Breakwater Studios, "The Last Repair Shop" takes place in Los Angeles at a warehouse where a team of craftspeople fix thousands of student instruments. The 40-minute documentary also shows how their skilled work helps repair the kids and families in the community they serve.

"To Breakwater Studios, who gave this girl from STL a chance to show what she's made of and be herself while doing it, I am forever grateful," Silerio wrote on Facebook.

"The Last Repair Shop" is streaming now on Disney+. You can also stream it for free on the Los Angeles Times' YouTube channel.
