Report of fire at Gateway Arch sparked from control panel smoke, firefighters say

People reported a fire in the structure's north leg at around 10:40 a.m., the St. Louis Fire Department said.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at the Gateway Arch at around 10:40 a.m. Monday, the department said.

Firefighters said people reported a fire was active in an elevator of the Arch's north leg, the department tweeted. Crews who arrived at the scene said they saw no fire or smoke coming from outside the structure.

Crews reportedly found the source of the report once they entered.

"There was smoke, no flame at a control panel for one of the tram doors," a Gateway Arch spokesperson told 5 On Your Side. "They are locking it out and getting clearance from the fire department. The visitor center should reopen within the next 15-20 minutes."

Firefighters have since shut off electricity to the affected elevator, the fire department said. Smoke also stopped at around 11:30 a.m.

A 5 On Your Side photographer reported Arch personnel began letting people back inside at around 11:17 a.m.

Firefighters have not shared information on the expected cause of the control panel smoke.

This is a developing situation. This article will be updated with the latest information as it is released.
