FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — A single-car crash Thursday in St. Clair County, Illinois, left a man with minor injuries and his car nearly split in half.

The French Village Fire Department responded to a single-car crash around 8:30 a.m. near the eight-mile marker on westbound Interstate 64 in Illinois.

When first responders arrived they said the car was nearly split in half after hitting a light pole at a high rate of speed. The driver was outside of the car walking around with a minor injury and was later transported to an area hospital, according to the fire department's Facebook post.

The driver was the only person in the car, the fire department said.

"We would like to remind everyone to please slow down on the roadways. This accident could have easily resulted in a different outcome. Please slow down and get there alive," the department said in a Facebook post.

Responders spent nearly an hour clearing debris off of the highway.
