Man charged in crash that killed 2 in East St. Louis taken into custody

The incident happened on Feb. 9 on Bond Avenue at South 36th Street near the city's border with Cahokia Heights.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — A 23-year-old man was charged for a crash that killed two people last week in East St. Louis, Illinois. 

Zachary P. Carpenter was charged with two counts of reckless homicide for the crash on Feb. 9 that killed Marilyn Hill and Willie Buford. 

He was also charged with two counts of failure to report an accident involving death and one count of unlawful use of a weapon, according to the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office.

The incident happened on Feb. 9 on Bond Avenue at South 36th Street, near the city's border with Cahokia Heights.

An Illinois State Police spokesperson said a Cahokia Heights police cruiser was pursuing a vehicle that was speeding westbound in the eastbound lanes of Bond Avenue. The speeding car crashed into another car that was pulling into a driveway, killing both Hill and Buford.

Carpenter then got out of his car and ran, police said. An officer who chased after the suspect watched him pull out a gun, police said.

ISP said in a statement the Carpenter shot himself in the hand after pulling out his gun.

He was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police did not provide an update on his condition. 

US Marshals took Carpenter into custody on Feb. 28. He is being held in the St. Clair County jail.
