ST. LOUIS — Another death was reported this weekend at the City Justice Center in downtown St. Louis.

Monte Chambers, a spokesperson for the city's public safety director, said an inmate was found unconscious inside his cell Sunday morning. The inmate died less than an hour later.

He was identified Monday as 34-year-old detainee Javon White.

Chambers said a jail officer found the man unconscious in his cell at 6:09 a.m. Sunday. The officer immediately called for medical assistance, and medical staff at the jail attempted life-saving measures until EMS could arrive.

Chambers said EMS workers arrived at 6:18 and started treating the man. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital at 6:27. He was pronounced dead at 6:47.

Officials are calling it an apparent suicide.

This is the fourth death in four months at the City Justice Center and the 14th since 2020.
