St. Louis restaurant named in Esquire's 'Best New Restaurants in America'

The restaurant was the only one in Missouri to make the list.

ST. LOUIS — Esquire magazine has named a St. Louis sushi-focused restaurant on The Hill one of the 50 best new restaurants in America.

Sado, located at 5201 Shaw Ave., was named on the annual list of "Best New Restaurants in America" by the magazine on Tuesday. A group of the magazine's food writers traveled and dined at more than 200 restaurants and compiled their list of the 50 best.

The restaurant was the only one in Missouri to make the list.

Sado was Nick Bognar's second restaurant concept and opened in March 2023.

Esquire noted the restaurant's "diner-thick menu" with a combination of Bgonar's Thai and Japanese background.

"Plenty of labor goes on unseen (there’s a large kitchen with an area for aging fish), but it’s worn lightly, it's given freely, and its fruits are tasted with joy," food writer Joshua David Stein said.

Bognar's first restaurant Indo, located at 1641D Tower Grove Ave., was also featured in Esquire's 2020 Best New Restaurant list.

Bognar was named a semifinalist for the 2023 James Beard Foundation Awards and was a nominee in 2019 and 2020 for the James Beard Rising Star Chef.
