ST. LOUIS — A person was rushed to the hospital in critical condition from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while officers were trying to serve a search warrant, the department said.

Sgt. Charles Wall with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said the incident happened Tuesday morning in the 5000 block of Lindenwood Avenue. The search warrant was in relation to the deadly shooting of a woman in the same area on Oct. 21.

Wall said while officers with the department's SWAT team were approaching the home, officers heard a single gunshot from inside the home. When officers got into the home, they found the person suffering from a gunshot wound.

The person was taken to the hospital and was listed in critical condition.

Wall said the person with the gunshot wound was the subject of the search warrant. He did not say why police considered the person a suspect in the October homicide. Police identified the victim of the Oct. 21 homicide as Carroll Riley.

No officers were injured during the incident and no officers fired their weapons, Wall said.
