Shots fired at security officer in downtown St. Louis, police officer en route involved in crash

The security guard was in a car when the suspects opened fire, spraying the guard with glass.

ST. LOUIS — A suspect opened fire at a security guard in downtown St. Louis after the guard confronted them while they were breaking into cars early Friday morning.

Around 3:15 a.m., a security guard working for the Hampton Inn spotted several people breaking into cars in the parking lot in the 300 block of Washington Avenue. Police said the suspects got into a white Nissan Pathfinder with out-of-state plates and sped off.

As the guard tried to chase after the SUV to get the license plates, one of the suspects opened fire.

The guard wasn't struck by gunfire but was cut from the shattered glass.

A St. Louis police officer was heading to the scene of the shooting when they were involved in a crash. The police officer and a civilian were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Police said the officer's marked car had its emergency lights activated.
