Historic St. Louis restaurant location goes on the market

The location was open for nearly 50 years before it was shuttered at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ST. LOUIS — The former location of a St. Louis staple just went on the market.

The building that housed Charlie Gitto's Downtown, located at 207 N 6th Street north of Kiener Plaza, has been put on the market by the Sansone Group Real Estate Firm. The going price was set at $575,000 as of Wednesday.

The building housed the restaurant for nearly 50 years until it shut its doors at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The death of the restaurant's owner and namesake, Charlie Gitto Sr., on July 4 2020 complicated matters further.

The restaurant reopened for several months after stay-at-home orders were lifted last year, but then closed in October 2020 for renovations during the baseball off-season. In February, however, just as the restaurant was about to reopen, a pipe burst, causing catastrophic damage to the more than 100-year-old building.

In the years following, the restaurant teased a possible rebrand, saying on Instagram it would change its name to Charlie's on 6th in 2021 and announced on its website that it would reopen its doors in 2022. Those plans never came to fruition.

The Charlie Gitto name lives on through the area's other restaurants. Charlie Gitto's On the Hill and Harlie Gitto's at Hollywood Casino are both owned by Charlie Gitto Jr. Additionally, Charlie Gitto Sr.'s grandson, Louie Vangel, opened Vangel's Restaurant & Bar in 2022.
