Victim identified as police continue investigating deadly shooting in Clayton

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated to assist with the homicide investigation.

CLAYTON, Mo. — It's been more than a day after a person was shot and killed in Clayton.

Carol, a resident in the area, said she heard around five gunshots Monday morning.

"I actually heard gunshots at 5:15 in the morning and I immediately heard sirens and the police coming," Carol said.

According to the Clayton Police Department, the shooting happened just before 5:30 a.m. at an apartment building in the 7500 block of Wydown Boulevard. Officers arrived at the scene to find a victim with a gunshot wound.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated to assist with the homicide investigation.

"I don't want them to just arrest any Jill or Joe, just because they want to solve this crime. I want them to do their best job," Carol said.

It's the first homicide Clayton has had since 2006.

Phil Berwick who also lives in the area and heard the shots said it's rare for any crime to happen here.

"It was just so out of the ordinary to see a crime scene investigation on Wydown Boulevard," Berwick said.

Berwick said that while it was early in the morning, he was troubled that a crime like this could happen in a high-traffic area.

"Those bullets could go anywhere and that's what would worry me is a guy shoots and misses and you're 500 yards away and get hit by a bullet," Berwick said.

"It can happen anywhere, it can happen anywhere," Carol said.

The St. Louis County medical examiner identified the victim Tuesday night as a 41-year-old.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Major Case Squad asks if you have any information regarding the incident to call 314-955-0817.
