Man shot after dispute outside Enterprise Center in St. Louis

Police said the victim was approached by an acquaintance with a gun and a "personal dispute" ensued.

ST. LOUIS — A man was shot and injured Tuesday afternoon near the Enterprise Center in downtown St. Louis.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said the shooting happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. near South 14th Street and Clark Avenue, a heavily trafficked area that intersects the Enterprise Center, the Gateway Transportation Center and City Hall.

Police said the victim was approached by an acquaintance with a gun. A "personal dispute" ensued and the gun went off during the struggle, grazing the victim in the head. Police said the victim was conscious and breathing and expected to survive.

The gun was recovered at the scene. Police said a person was detained, and officers are working to confirm if he was the person involved. 

No further information was immediately available. 

The Blues were scheduled to play the Tampa Bay Lightning at Enterprise Center at 7 p.m. 5 On Your Side was there as fans began arriving at the game.

"I'm from St. Charles and I grew up coming to these games. Now that I live here as an adult in the city, to me it's wonderful to see all these people coming out here," fan Todd Fasick said.

City leaders have said getting people downtown will help deter crime.

"I was just down here for the Metallica concert," fan Hailey Watson said.

She lives in Affton, Missouri, and was unaware of the shooting.

 "It's always awful and makes you feel bad ... you shouldn't let it affect you from doing things," she added.

"It can be rough. It can be rough," Scotty Watson said.

A point not lost on Fasick.

"We hear gunshots on a weekly basis ... we don't change our lives because of it ... it's just part of living in the city," he said.

 "I feel perfectly safe. We come downtown and the Soulard area a lot," Venus Lively added.
