Tensions rise at St. Louis rally: Israeli flag stomped on, pro-Palestinian organizer says protesters were 'triggered'

On Sunday, two different rallies took place in the St. Louis area. Hundreds of supporters went to each.

ST. LOUIS — November 7th marks one month since Hamas launched a deadly and brutal attack in Israel.

The latest war has taken thousands of lives and created tension around the world.

St. Louis is no exception.

On Sunday, two different rallies took place in the St. Louis area, with hundreds of supporters going to each.

At Memorial Park in Clayton, there was an interfaith rally, which was a public demonstration of solidarity for Israel and a silent prayer protest.

About 10 minutes away, there was a pro-Palestinian rally on the Delmar Loop hosted by American Muslims for Palestine Missouri Chapter. The organization's government relations coordinator, Neveen Ayesh, said they've been extra vocal since Oct. 7, rallying weekly.

Ayesh was born in St. Louis and raised in occupied Palestine. She came back to Missouri in 2010 and has been involved in representing Palestine since.

"We rallied yesterday demanding a cease-fire. There was also a pro-Israel rally held not too far from where we were," Ayesh said.

Efrat Okev was at the prayer service in solidarity for Israel.

Okev is from Israel and has lived in St. Louis for the last 20 years. She said she wanted to show her support for her home.

"Me and a couple more Israeli people decided to check out the Palestinian rally. There are two sides to every story. I wanted to to show my support of Israel. I felt that our side is not heard. Other people, the other side, the Palestinians are making so much noise and no one hears us," Okev said.

Okev said that's why she brought the Israeli flag to represent.

She shared, that she felt people coming towards her and she felt threatened.

"I stood there with the flag. One lady grabbed the flag from my hands, threw it on the floor and destroyed it. People were just laughing. They told us, 'Kill Israel, We got you. We got you.' They took photos and videos of us. People were calling me names. I was attacked with rage, I thought it was a peaceful rally," Okev said.

A video taken at the rally shows several people stomping on the Israeli flag after it was taken.

Okev shared chants she heard.

"I mean 'free Palestine from the river to the sea'? When I asked people, 'What is the river to the sea'? This is the extermination of Israel," Okev said.

Okev filed a report with University City Police in response to what happened.

Ayesh spoke to 5 On Your Side recalling the moment.

"She was jumping around with her Israeli flag. It triggered a lot of the youth there because we are all there grieving. We are up all night, not sleeping, not eating, we are watching our families and friends being bombarded and killed. What did you expect? The woman who attended I think was looking for a reaction," she added.

Ayesh also believes their rallies on a national level aren't getting enough coverage and are being ignored by mainstream media.

That's why they'll continue rallying to get their voices heard.

Both women may have different views, but both are passionate about their call for awareness and change.

Ayesh said, "Right now the top demand is a cease-fire. There cannot be peace unless there is peace for the Palestinian people."

Okev asked for people to keep educating themselves.

"We're fighting for our lives. I hope that people really read and understand this conflict. The Middle East, it's complicated. People need to be educated and they need to check their sources. Do not believe in everything," she said.

Both women told 5 On Your Side that they had received death threats during this time.
