ST. LOUIS — Some folks have the perception that riding on MetroLink is not safe. Kevin Scott of Bi-State Development told 5 On Your Side that his mission is to make the train much more secure and easier to use.
Bi-State is ready to begin a new project at each MetroLink station that will transform what you see and experience when you ride. This huge $52 million undertaking will activate over 2,000 closed-circuit security cameras that communicate with the central command, build safer terminal areas and install high-security fencing.
Scott, who's the former chief of police in Ballwin, detailed how the current fencing around stations is really only intended to keep people from walking on the tracks and needs bolstering.
"This project reinvents the light rail system here in St. Louis," he said. "We're taking an aggressive stance on changing the dynamic of MetroLink itself."
So, what kind of delays can you expect if you're coming downtown for a Blues game, watching the City SC playoffs or if you use MetroLink each week? Scott told us Bi-State will begin the prep work on Oct. 23, but they would anticipate very little impact of service.
Bi-State Development is starting with four Metrolink stations in Illinois and plans to transform all 38 stations.
