Fontbonne University student brought gun to campus, police say

The prosecuting attorney's office charged 19-year-old Jordan Smith with carrying a loaded weapon onto a school premises, a Class E felony.

CLAYTON, Mo. — A Fontbonne University student is facing criminal weapons charges after police officers found a gun in his dorm room.

Jordan Smith, a 19-year-old from Lake St. Louis, faces an unlawful use of a weapon charge, a written release from the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said.

The prosecuting attorney's office charged Smith with carrying a loaded weapon into a school premises, which is a Class E felony.

Smith's bond was set at $50,000. He posted bond and was no longer in custody as of Friday.

"According to a Clayton Police Department investigation, a witness reported to the dean of students at Fontbonne University that he thought the defendant had a gun in his room," the release said. 

Officers went to the dorm room. Smith consented to having police search his room for the weapon, the release said.

"Police located an FN America 9mm handgun between the mattress and mattress topper," the prosecuting attorney's office said in the release. "The firearm had a loaded 24-round extended magazine inserted in it. There were several more live bullets in the right top of the desk."

Smith faces a sentence of up to four years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

According to Missouri law, it's illegal to carry a weapon into any higher education institution or elementary or secondary school facility.
