Police seek car after stray gunfire strikes side of elementary school building

Class was not in session at the time the bullet struck the school's HVAC system, police said.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Police are looking for a car after stray gunfire struck the side of an elementary school Tuesday afternoon in south St. Louis County.

The St. Louis County Police Department said the incident happened at around 1 p.m. Multiple witnesses said a white car parked at the intersection of Kammerer and Frankfort avenues, and a person in a black hoodie got out of the driver's seat, fired several gunshots, and drove away.

A parked car on Frankfort and an HVAC system at Bayless Elementary School were struck by gunfire. The school was not in session and no one was injured, police said.

The St. Louis County Police Department shared surveillance video of a white Kia Optima speeding away from the scene.

Anyone with information on the vehicle is asked to call county police at 636-529-8225 or 911.

Shots Fired: Kammerer Avenue & Frankfort Avenue

On Tuesday 10/10/2023 around 1:05 PM, a white sedan parked at the intersection of Kammerer Avenue & Frankfort Avenue. Multiple witnesses reported a subject in a black hoodie exiting the driver's seat and firing several rounds from a handgun in a northwest direction on Frankfort Avenue before fleeing the scene. A parked vehicle on Frankfort Avenue and an HVAC system at Bayless Elementary School were struck by gunfire, but school was not in session and no one was injured. Nearby surveillance footage captured a white Kia Optima fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed.
