Motorcyclist 'performing wheely' fatally strikes pedestrian Friday

The driver was 'performing a wheely' when the motorcyclist fatally struck the pedestrian, police said.

ST. LOUIS — A man was walking in St. Louis's Mt. Pleasant neighborhood Friday night when he was struck by a motorcycle. 

According to a written release from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the driver and the pedestrian were both taken to the hospital, where the pedestrian died. The motorcyclist was last reported to be in serious condition.

"[The motorcycle driver] was traveling south on South Broadway in the bicycle lane, while on the rear wheel of the motorcycle with the front wheel raised in the air, commonly referred to as performing a wheely," the report said. " The pedestrian was entering the street to cross between two parked vehicles, when [the motorcycle driver] struck the pedestrian with his motorcycle."

The crash happened minutes before 2:30 a.m. in the 4700 block of South Broadway, the portion of the roadway south of Itaska Street and north of River Bluff Place.

The police report said the fatal crash was an accident. SLMPD's Accident Reconstruction team has been assigned to the case.
