FEMA invites Metro East flood victims to flood map info sessions

The meetings will give Metro East residents the chance to look at new floodplain maps and accompanying flood insurance rate maps.

ST. LOUIS — Residents from Monroe, Madison and St. Clair counties who were affected by July's historic flooding in Illinois are invited to review new flood maps with Federal Emergency Management Agency experts at upcoming open houses.

According to FEMA, the open houses will give Illinois residents the opportunity to look at new flood insurance study reports, floodplain maps and accompanying insurance rate maps to learn what areas were designated significant flood hazards in the counties and guide future development.

The details for the meetings are as follows:

  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at The View at 11 South, 1000 Eleven South, Suite SA, Columbia, IL 62236.
  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 18-19 at Wood River Public Library, 326 East Ferguson Ave., Wood River, IL 62095.
  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at Clyde C. Jordan Senior Citizen Center, 6755 State St., East St. Louis, IL 62203.
  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at Caseyville Community Center, 909 South Main St., Caseyville, IL 62232.

FEMA urged property owners, realtors, lenders and insurance agents to take advantage of the meetings to learn more about flood risk and mitigation in their community.

Once the maps take effect, they will serve as the basis for flood insurance rating as well as flood protection regulations adopted under the National Flood Insurance Program, according to FEMA.
