ST. LOUIS — Some residents in south St. Louis were asked to evacuate after a gas main was hit Thursday morning.

The St. Louis Fire Department said a construction crew was working on a rain garden in the 4100 block of Louisiana Avenue. A rain garden is used to collect water runoff from heavy rains.

While constructing the rain garden, they hit a gas main, and a large amount of gas began leaking.

The department told 5 On Your Side residents in the area were asked to evacuate as a precaution while officials work to contain the leak.

Fire officials went to each home to see if gas was collecting in the basements.

"If gas is collecting in the basements, we have a threat of an explosion because we have ignition sources in those basements," fire captain Leon Whitener said at the scene.

Thankfully, none of the homes in the area collected any gas. As of 10:30 a.m., the gas main was fixed, and residents returned to their homes.

No other information about this incident has been released. This is a developing story and will be updated as 5 On Your Side confirms more information.
