Passenger falls out of car sunroof on I-64, dies from injuries sustained

A 23-year-old woman fell out of the top of the car as the driver took a curve on Interstate 64.

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Illinois — A Table Grove, Illinois, woman died after falling out of the sunroof on a car early Tuesday morning on Interstate 64 in St. Clair County.

At about 4:10 a.m. Tuesday, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300 was traveling westbound on I-64 near Interstate 55 south, according to Illinois State Police. 

The front seat passenger, 23-year-old Makenze Coulter, was standing through the sunroof and fell out when the driver was navigating a curve. Coulter sustained life-threatening injuries and died at the scene.

As crews investigated the scene, I-64 westbound was closed for several hours. All lanes were reopened by 8:45 a.m. Tuesday. 

The driver of the car, a man from Bellefontaine, Missouri, was not identified. 

Police were continuing to investigate the incident.
