Man shot at police and fatally shot father before taking his own life in St. Louis County, police say

The suspect was identified as Dwight Hogans Jr. He was the son of the senior Hogans who was found shot to death inside a Northwoods home this week.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A man suspected in his father’s death also prompted a shootout with responding officers hours before the suspect was found dead, St. Louis County police reported Friday.

A welfare check was requested at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at a house in the 3700 block of Colonial Avenue. Uniformed officers from the Northwoods Police Department arrived to find a man near the home. As they approached the house, the man started shooting at the officers, St. Louis County police said. The officers returned fire and the man ran off.

Police searched the area but did not find him.

The officers weren't shot, but one officer was taken to a hospital for treatment of an undisclosed medical issue.

Officers went inside the home where the welfare check was requested and found 59-year-old Dwight Hogans Sr. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 12 hours later, officers found Dwight Hogans Jr., 24, dead from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was the son of the senior Hogans and also lived on the same block where the shooting occurred.

St. Louis County police believe the son was responsible for the shootout with police and the death of his father.

Detectives with the St. Louis County Police Department Crimes Against Persons unit are handling the ongoing investigation, which police said, “is very active at this time.”

Several police crime scene unit vans were parked at the scene overnight into the daylight Thursday. Officers blocked off a portion of the street while detectives investigated the scene.

The Northwoods police officers involved in the shooting are 48 years old with eight years of law enforcement experience and 53 years old with five years of law enforcement experience. The officers have not been named.
