ST. LOUIS — A 68-year-old record was broken in St. Louis on Friday, as afternoon temperatures reached 101 degrees.

Friday's high of 101 is now the hottest temperature ever recorded on June 18. The previous high was set in 1953. Friday was also the first time we hit 100 degrees since July 14, 2018, nearly three years ago.

The storm track or jet stream is well to the north of our area, as a large heat dome of high pressure continues to bake the west coast.

The dew point has already gone up to 65-70, so it is humid. The heat index or the "feels like" temperature has been 105 degrees or a tad higher on Friday and expect the same on Sunday. Clouds on Saturday kept the temperatures in check.

The heat advisory has been extended until 7 p.m. Sunday for St. Louis city and county, St. Charles, Jefferson County in Missouri, and in Illinois, Madison, St. Clair and Monroe County.

Hot weather safety and resources

As the National Weather Service says, look before you lock! Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Also take extra precautions when outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activity to the early morning or evening, and stay hydrated.

Cooldownstlouis.org is a great resource if you or someone you know needs help cooling down.

Storms possible

On Saturday, the cold front stays north of our area. The storm prediction center has the metro in a slight risk or level 2. Large hail and severe wind gusts over 58 mph are the biggest threats.

The thunderstorm activity did break the heat Saturday but may not break the heat on Sunday.

Sunday we also have a risk of severe weather, especially later at night.
