While the St. Louis area may have some rumbles of thunder, areas to the southeast of the metro area have an increasing risk of stronger storms as you travel toward the Missouri Bootheel and the Ohio River.

A strengthening storm system will move from northeast Texas to western Indiana by late Thursday evening. With the storm passing southeast of the St. Louis area, the warmer, more unstable air conducive to severe weather will stay southeast of the metro area.

Some of the storms may produce strong wind gusts and hail. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, but the chance of long-track violent tornadoes is focused mainly across parts of Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi.

Overnight Thursday into Friday, the rain will end as the storm system pulls away. The wind picks up as a wind advisory has been issued starting at 7 p.m. from St. Louis eastward. Northwest winds will be sustained at 20-30 mph with gusts 40-45 mph.

Relatively tranquil weather will return for the weekend with a very low rain chance late Saturday and highs in the mid to upper 70s. The storm prediction center has placed part of the viewing area in a risk of severe thunderstorms Saturday evening. Sunny Sunday and cooler with highs in the low 60s.
