St. Peters Rec-Plex helps train nationally renowned athletes

It has hosted Olympic tryouts and also has been the training ground for some big-name athletes, including a Stanley Cup winner.

ST. PETERS, Mo. — The Rec-Plex in St. Peters is a 450,000 square foot sports complex. It’s a playground for athletes of all levels.

“It’s very unique," said Rec-Plex Superintendent Phil Boettge.

This multi-level center has everything from swimming pools, skating rinks, an indoor track and even classes.

But the Rec-Plex also has some big bragging rights.

They hosted the Olympic Diving try-outs in June 2004. It has also been the training ground for some big-name athletes, like national skating champion Angela Wang and former Chicago Blackhawks player and Stanley Cup winner Brandon Bollig.

“Knowing that we can take athletes to that level is really cool. When you can see someone who has done it, kind of make a name for themselves, that we have the tools and we have the staff for them to get there,” said Boettge.

This week, the Rec-Plex will host the Ice Sports Industry World Recreational Team Championships. The competition will feature 600 figure skaters, ages 3 to 80, from 16 states and the Philippines, Kuwait and China.
