Travelers cancel trips to Dominican Republic

At least nine American tourists have died at resorts this year.

ST. LOUIS — Iesha Underwood and her husband DeCarlos traveled from Belleville to the Dominican Republic hoping for a dream vacation.

“We were celebrating 13 years being married,” she said. “We were hoping to come back with great memories.”

They enjoyed the beach, the drinks and the food, but on the second day of their trip, Underwood said they got very sick.

“My husband was throwing up in the sink,” Underwood said. “My heart was beating, racing, sweating profusely.”

Underwood always thought they ate something bad. Then, she started seeing the reports of other American tourists becoming sick or even dying at resorts.

“Hearing these stories about people coming forward and dying, it gives me nightmares,” Underwood said.

Underwood said she won’t go back, and other travelers are concerned, too.

Susan Hakenjos with Brentwood Travel in Creve Coeur said the Dominican Republic is one of the most popular destinations for St. Louis travelers. However, many are reconsidering their plans.

“We are in the midst of changing people on a daily basis, unfortunately,” Hakenjos said.

With no formal travel advisories, travelers who wish to cancel their trips could lose what they’ve already spent. Hakenjos said travel insurance allows people to cancel or change their plans at no cost. Some coverage plans also include medical coverage.

“Most people's health insurance doesn't cover them internationally, and most people are not aware of that,” Hakenjos said.

Hakenjos said her clients who have chosen to continue with their trips have not had any issues.

“In general, it is a beautiful and safe place,” she said. “It's up to you with what you're comfortable with.”
