Man charged with killing his next-door neighbor, stealing his car, cash

Police say Keith Hill, 42, said the dispute began over money.

SPANISH LAKE, Mo. — St. Louis County police say a Spanish Lake man killed his neighbor and stole the neighbor's car, credit cards and cash.

"I was shocked that it was a neighbor would do something like that to a neighbor," Sandra Reno said. She moved to the neighborhood in January adding "it was quiet, until yesterday."

Police initially responded to the 900 block of Burgos Street Saturday for a welfare check where they found 63-year-old Michael Shaw badly injured.

"He was a very nice man," neighbor Gerry Volz said of Shaw. "If you needed help with anything, he would come over and help you."

On Sunday, police charged Keith Hill, 42, with one count of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree robbery, one count of first-degree burglary and two counts of armed criminal action.

Police say Hill confessed to killing his next-door neighbor after a dispute over money. Hill told police he forced his way into Shaw's home and beat Shaw with a lamp before taking the victim’s credit cards, cash and car.

Volz has lived on Burgos Street for 46 years. She says they have security cameras on the driveway and alarms on their windows. She's not worried about security, though her extended family has expressed concern.

"They want us to move, but I'm not moving because we've never had any problems," Volz said. "This is the first real bad thing we've ever had."

Hill is being held on a $500,000, cash-only bond.

Shaw's vehicle, a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, was recovered in the City of St. Louis.
