New electric scooters in St. Louis operating illegally

The City of St. Louis told 5 On Your Side the company has not been given approval operate.

ST. LOUIS – St. Louisans may soon have another way to get around the city.

Electric scooters started popping up around St. Louis Thursday. The scooters are the same concept as ‘LimeBikes.’

5 On Your Side saw several of the scooters near Busch Stadium and the Arch. The City of St. Louis told 5 On Your Side the company has not been given approval operate. Officials will vote on Bird next week.

Bird is a last-mile electric vehicle sharing company dedicated to bringing low-cost, environmentally friendly transportation solutions to communities across the world, according to a press release.

It costs $1 to start each ride plus 15 cents per minute. Bird scooters can go a maximum of 15 mph and they last about 15 miles on a charge. The scooters are picked up for storage, charging and any necessary repairs each night and then parked at ‘nests’ by 7 a.m.

Riders are required to upload a valid driver’s license and confirm they’re older than 18 and must consent to a safety agreement in the app.
