Hawley Senate campaign spokeswoman calls Russia 'bad actor'

On Monday, before Trump corrected himself, Ford had said, "President Trump won. Hillary lost. It's time for Democrats and the media to move on, and the President should keep on being forceful with Russia."

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A spokeswoman for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Josh Hawley of Missouri says Russia is a "bad actor."

Spokeswoman Kelli Ford in a Tuesday statement said Russia "has been trying to meddle in our democracy for years."

Her statement comes after President Donald Trump during a Monday press conference in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin said he didn't see "any reason" why Russia would have meddled in the 2016 elections. Following bipartisan backlash, Trump on Tuesday said he meant the opposite.

On Monday, before Trump corrected himself, Ford had said, "President Trump won. Hillary lost. It's time for Democrats and the media to move on, and the President should keep on being forceful with Russia."

Hawley is vying for Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill's seat.
